Q: What is Active Noise Reduction? (ANR) A: ANR is a system of actively seeking ambient noise and suppressing it using a microphone, electronics, and a speaker. Our system samples the noise right at your ear, reverses it 180 degrees, and plays it back to actively cancel the noise.
Q: What frequency range is the ANR most effective? A: From 50-1000 Hz, where most prop blast, engine noise, and wind noise is located. Our system peaks at 20db attenuation at 200Hz. For more information, please view our Performance Curves in the Technical Spec (above).
Q: Are there different ANR kits for each headset? A: Although some headsets require different cables and modules specifically for that headset, model M01-A will install into most David Clark® style headsets.
Q: What headsets does your ANR system fit? A: Please see Headset Compatability Chart (above).
Q: What is the standard power source? A: The units require 9 Volts DC, which is provided from one 9-volt transistor battery (PP3 supplied) located in the battery box included with the kit. Typical battery life in most GA aircraft is 15-20 hours.
Q: What happens if the battery dies while I am flying? A: The ANR units are fail-safe. If your battery dies during flight, the headset will still operate as a normal passive headset with all transmit and receive capabilities intact.
Q: Can I install the ANR system into my headset myself? A: Yes, the ANR system can be installed by anyone with soldering experience. It is sold as a kit, and comes with everything you need (except a soldering iron and some hand tools) to convert one headset to ANR.
Q: Can I have someone else do the installation? A: Yes, most local avionics shops or TV repair shops will install the units for a fee. Or, you can send the headset to us and we will professionally install the ANR kit, bench test the headset to see that it functions correctly. Please send the headset in with all accessories (ear seals, cords, cables, adapters, etc.) so that we can bench test the headset after we have installed the ANR kit. For our shipping address, please contact us.
Q: What does your ANR system replace? A: Our system replaces the existing speakers, wiring, and foam that is in your headset.
Q: What holds the ANR modules into the headset? A: We use a high quality double-sided adhesive tape to hold the modules into the ear cups. Do not use any other adhesive or glue. Superglue, silicon, and most other glues will destroy the sensing microphones and void the warranty on the units.
Q: Will the ANR system make my headset heavier? A: No- the typical stock speaker weighs about 35 grams. Our ANR units weigh 34.6 grams, so the overall effect on the weight is negligible.
Q: Why should I buy your kit instead of a purpose-built ANR headset? A: Because we re-use most of your existing headset hardware, letting us concentrate on improving the ANR, and keeping prices low. If you already have a high quality headset that you have had for thirty years, it fits well, and you want the added benefits of ANR, this is the deal for you.
